10 FOR TUESDAYS - ED LEIGH PART TWO

How do you think the Internet has helped musicians?
The Internet has made it so much easier for musicians these days. At one point it would have been solely up to getting gigs and finding representation to build a fan base, working your way slowly to the top. Now however, someone can be as well known as The Who were without even leaving his or her bedroom. It allows the freedom to reach out to virtually anyone you want in the world without directly dealing with anyone. Websites like Soundcloud have made it so much easier for any artist (no matter how talented) to be seen by a huge audience, which is great.

What advice would you give to an up and coming producer/artist from your own experiences?
I would say most of all, don’t be afraid of rejection, and speak to as many people as you can. It’s all about getting in contact with the right people. But you don’t want to be coming across the wrong way so I’d say it’s vital to be friendly with people and take any criticism you get in the most positive of ways. Also, you should be as passionate about other peoples music as you are with own (or vice versa).

If you were stuck on a desert island, which other artist would you want to be stuck with?
I’d like to give only one answer but I’m going to have to give you a tied response again. I’d say Willie Nelson because he’s a fantastic musician for one reason, but also he comes highly recommended on the grow your own food scene. My other option would be Rihanna (for obvious reasons).

What artists in the chart are you impressed with at the moment?
I really like DJ Fresh’s new track featuring Rita Ora, I am purely a sucker though when it comes to mainstream drum and bass. Out of the genuine popular charts I would have to say Jessie J is a guilty pleasure. She makes catchy tunes that don’t seem to settle for the standard formula that most popular music uses these days. Also I saw a performance on TV where she pulled a girl out of the crowd to sing with her, and she seemed to be thoroughly buzzing off the energy flying around.

And finally what do you think about StudioBookers and why would you recommend it to your friends?
I think StudioBookers has stumbled onto a great idea; musicians are often left confused or struggle to know where to go with their ideas, StudioBookers provides a place for you to find the best direction to go in, that suits you best. Also they’re willing to give you helpful industry advice that’ll never go amiss with the amount of booby traps you can find yourself in if you’re not careful.
