CHOOSING A STUDIO TO SUIT YOUR NEEDS

As a band/artist, when identifying a studio, it is very important to pinpoint exactly what you are looking for as a client.  Your choice of studio will be affected by your recording needs. Are you a singer looking to record vocals or will you need to record a whole band. This guide is designed to help artists recognise what is important for them when choosing and booking a studio for recording.

  • Initially you will be searching for studios in your area (there is no point booking a studio half way across the world if you can’t get there,) this alone will help to whittle down your list to a smaller selection of possible studios.
  • Once you have found possible studios in your area, it is important to identify your requirements as an artist such as; if you are recording a full band you need to make sure the studio has the facilities to do this, if you require any additional equipment (amps, synths, specific mics etc,) check that the possible studios have these.
  • Hopefully you have now found a studio in your location, which can cater for your needs as an artist. Most studios provide you with information on the staff at their studios. It is very important to check that a studio’s engineer is suited to producing you as an artist. It is no good going to a studio where the engineer is only experienced in recording vocalists if you are wanting to recording something like a full string section. When a top artist chooses or is paired with a producer/engineer to record a song, they make sure that they are suited to their style of music, you need to do the same.
These three initial steps should help you to find the perfect studio for your needs as an artist.

It is also very important to point out that many recording studio provide special deals to clients. For example a studio may offer a reduced rate for a band to record a four track EP, so it is very important to look out for these deals. Even if these are not advertised many studios are flexible and would be interested in offers like this, so don’t be afraid to ask.

The video below has some interesting information in regards to finding a studio.
